I have a '59 TO35 deluxe that leaks oil at the left side lower lift arm pivot pin. This pin is loose and apears to be tapered and probably has a nut inside that came loose.I dont find any info in my manual on this so I need some advice. What is involved to fix this?

If you email me at:- fergusontractors(at)tiscali.co.uk I will send you some pictures so you can see what you are up against doing this work. I will give you the information you need to do the job. But it as Big Dean tells you if it is worn through running loose for so long it will be a problem to seal it. You will have to see how badly when you get it stripped down...John

Running one with that pin loose will wallow the hole in the axle housing to where you cannot keep them tight if you have run yours like that for 3 years it may all ready be wallow out some. I would advice you remove the axle housing and replace the loose pin with a new one. You can access both of the pull pins by remove removing the left axle housing and setting the ring gear and carrier out of the center housing to access the one on the right side.

Can I live with the leak? I have been living with it for over 3 years and watching the pin for signs of additional loosining. It needs about 1 gal of oil a month but I think it's time to fix the thing. It's prety clear it's not going to fix itself.

I've never had the problem but as a minimum, the pin nut has to be tightened and from what I understand from previous posts, unless you have arms the length of an orangatang, you have to pull the rear axle trumpet off. I always wondered if you could make a special tool that would allow you to reach the nut from the side plate where the trans/hydraulic fluid dipstick is at. It would have to be a long handled wrench of the appropriate size for the nut (5/8" NF). It's supposed to be a castellated nut with a cotter pin but saince the nut is loose, the cotter pin was either not installed or fell out. If you have to pull the trumpets off, I'd replace the pin and nut and use Loctite AND a cotter pin. I'd also put some RTV on the shank of the pin where it goes through the housing to act as a seal.

The axel housing must be removed to get to the nut on the backside.

Below is a post from Jan where Barry had the same problem.

Can you live with the leak?
