Tranny fluid

Was just reading about the tranny fluid post down below, in the tea 20-85, i buy a 20 litre pail a 4 litre jug, can,t remember if i use the whole 4 litre jug or not,something came to mind about this when i was reading the post,do you check the fluid level on the dipstick when the fluid is hot or cold, i check mine hot , it is usually a touch over full.

Providing you have drained from all 3 plugs so the transmission is empty, just pour in the correct amount of 5 imp.gallons and it will be correct. We used to do this as we didn't have the luxury of being able to wait while it levels out.The reason it is so slow to level out is that the back of the gearbox acts as a baffle to prevent the oil surging when working up and down hills, just like you might have in a fuel tank.

The dipstick is set to check cold.

Be careful not to overfill when changing fluid. When you are doing that last 4 liters put in 1/2 to 1 liter then wait 5 min. or so then check the dip stick before putting in another 1/2 liter. to let the fluid level out. Remember, the fill is up front, the dip stick is in the back and the fluid is thick and flows slowly.

And boy is it important not to over fill. Jeff I'm not being contadictive but, I would lengthen that wait time. I was refilling my TO20, temp was about 65 degrees and I poured in the first 5 Gal. Waited about 30 minutes and checked the dipstick. Way low. Added a qt and waited about 10 minutes. Still low. Repeated this untill I had it about a 1/4 inch low on the dipstick. Left it over night. Checked it in the morning and it was about 1/2 inch over full. Two mistakes, I only drained two sump plugs then read the book and found there were three. Second mistake was not waiting longer between fill and check. When I do it again I think I will wait over night between the 5 gal and the next qt. Then be very careful with the small quantities until I hit the 1/4 inch low mark. I used a manual suction pump to remove the excess. Boy is that a pain. Live and learn and read the book first. Or do more research in the archives in this site FIRST. Now I can laugh at myself but, after I pulled this bonehead stunt, my leg and butt hurt from kicking myself around my 5 acre hillside homesite. Glenn everyone here add's to the group.

When I first did my TE-20 oil, I did pull all three plugs one at a time... Never went back and pulled them again... Thus, By the time I got to the back the front two had filled from the rear again. And to top that the old oil was contaminated with water. Thus I contaminated 6 gallans of new oil. Ouch.

Good point on the time, I did mine in August (85 deg F)

Jeff: I was lucky there apparently wasn't any condesate in mine and the after running it around for a while I checked to see if any contamiates were evident and found none. As I say LUCKY.
I have always thought I was smart, not arrogant just smarter than the average bear. Then I pull one of these bonehead moves and realize the average bear is realy smarter than your truly. And I'm not afraid to adnit it. The old sages live and learn, and listen to the other guys are always good standards to live by. There is no such thing as a dumb question just an unasked question. Keep up the good help.
