Identication questions got me wandering??

I've been watching the board for a while now, all the identifaction questions got me thinking. I know mine is a TO-20 she has the Z 120 engine, TO 20 cast into the axle housings, all the tell tell signs. But for some reason both tags are gone, I don't know why, maybe someone was trying to pass her off as a Ford, at one time she's been painted like a 8N, sounds better than some other reasons I could think of to remove the plates. So my question is, Is there anyway to narrow down what year she was built, without the plates? Did Ferguson use casting codes, I know farmalls have them all over them after you learn what they are, so I thought I might be over looking something. Thanks jeff

Guys,
The coil is horizontal on the TE-20, TO-20, TO-30 as well as the TO-35. The vertical coil is on the TEA's or those models with the Standard engine. There should be a casting date, for the TO-20's on the hydraulic cover and without looking, I believe on the right side of the transmission housing. I would guess that the parts were cast a maximum of about 3 months prior to assembly.So you should be able to narrow down the manufacture date of your TO-20 to within 3 months if you find a casting date. If need be I can take another look at my TO-20 to be positive of the casting locations.

thanks for this post--i am also confused regarding the "signs" on Our tractor--serial plate at steering post has serial number and Harry Ferguson,Inc

there is no breather vent on dash, engine tag says 120 but the coil is horizontal, not vertical as a previous post said it should be hummmmm m-the engine was worked on as i understand it, i wonder if the mechanic hybridized this tractor--i have the housing numbers, is there a way to cross reference these numbers?

A Z120 engine and no hole in the dash for the carburetor/air filter air supply indicates a TO-20. There is no external oil filter on the Z120, either.

The TO20 and 30 were supposed to have the date the castings were made in the rear axle trumpet housings on the front face. There are a lot of tractors running around without serial tags, people try to pass them off as a later model. the code will be something like 12 4 49.
