Okay all you experts, I have a 1954 TEA 2085 that when it runs backfires out the exhaust. If I hold the choke out it seems to run a little better. It has a Zenith 24t2 carb which I have had on and off too many times to count. I think the machine is running lean but I have opened both adjustments and there is no noticable difference. Now I did pull the front cover off the engine to change an oil seal and ended up moving the governor adjusting screw. Have no clue what it is set at now. Could that be part of the problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Check the Carburettor throttle spindle for wear, mine flops about and leaks air, i am going to get a repair kit.

I always recommend that you begin troubleshooting poor running problems by assuring that you have a fat, bluish spark provided by the ignition system. If the spark is orangey r yellowish, find out why. (Bad coil, wrong point opening, corroded points, oil on points, loose or broken wire in primary circuit worn distributor shaft/bushing, etc)If you do have a good fat, bluis spark, move on to the fuel system, making sure that you first have adequate fuel delivery to the carburetor. If you have a drain plug on the carb fuel bowl, open the fuel valve at the tank, hold a can under the carb drain plug, remove the plug and observe the fuel flow. You should have a continuous gush of fuel out the drain for as long as it's open, but at least for 30 seconds. If you don't, you need to find out why. Some carbs have filter screens on the inlet elbow that clog up with debris, sometimes the outlet valve on the tank has a small screen or filter that clogged , etc..
Once have assured your self that you have a strong spark and adequate fuel flow, then begin to look for other problems. Are your plug wires connected in the proper sequence to match the engine firing order? Is the ignition timing correct? Check each item out systematically and write your results down.
You stated that the engine seems to run a little better with the bit of choke. That could indicate a lean condition but it can also be a symptom caused by a weak spark (richer mixtures are more easily ignited by a weak spark.)The backfire could be retarded ignition timing, incorrect firing order, or a burned or maladjuted valve.

hope this helps.

my 43 fergie also ran rough after replacing all the ignition parts it turned out to be exhaust/intake manifold gasket was leaking allowing burnt gases to sucked back into engine put new gasket on that took care of problem

If leaking in burnt (exhaust) gases, choking should make it worse, not better. J2

Could be ignition, but your symptoms as described (choke helps, etc) seem to rule this unlikely. Sounds like it"s running lean, as you say. First check the compresssions to eliminate valve problems (broken valve spring, etc). Assuming OK, check fuel flow from carb. If OK, then opening main jet should rectify, unless you have an air leak between carb & valves. Is gasket between carb / manifold OK?

Too many possiblities to choose. You need to eliminate some. 1-valve adjustment (particularly exhaust)
2-Sticking valves (particularly exhaust)
3-Burned exhaust valve
4-Carb mixture
5-Fuel flow
6-Intake manifold leak
7-Weak spark
8-Ignition timing
9- and probably more...
I presume you have or will check the fuel flow (5). Then do a compression test. If not up to par, check valve lash and recheck compression. Results will determine 1,2,3. Check spark (points, rotor, wires, sparkplugs) and timing; that takes care of 7,8. For 6, you might try an old trick using a propane torch. While running, direct some raw propane at the points where it might be sucking air in. Include the carb shafts. If it changes how it runs, you have located a source of a significant air leak. Then, if you have eliminated everything but the carb (4), then you have probably located your problem, and you will have to take it off for the 101st time. J2
