TO-20 Clutch questions

After I got the 20 back together I got her out yesterday, and the clutch seems to be slipping, trying to go up a hill in 4th gear the engine stayed at the same speed but the tractor slowed down to a stop, I put it in 1st and went on up the hill. I need to plow with this tractor in about a month, I don't know how that'll work out without gettin this fixed, going through the archives I found out that free travel should be set at 3/8" not 3/16", so I'm going to try to adjust it. If that doesn't work looks like she'll go back in the garage for a clutch. My questions are how wise is it to replace the clutch plate and not the pressure plate? Looking at the parts on this site, the clutch is cheap 43.00, but the pressure plate is $170, so if I could get away with it I'd rather just change the clutch right now. Looking through the archives I got the feeling the that i should be able to walk in the local auto parts place and pick up a clutch, something about being the same as a old ford car, anybody have part numbers that I could use to check on them? Anybody had trouble with the clutch slipping? Thanks jeff

I just wanted to say thanks for all the help guys, I got to check things out today, she's goin to need a clutch. I called my local parts guy, and got some good news, he'll have all the parts I need Friday for alot less than I thought it was going to cost. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again jeff

I'm in the middle of a TO-20 clutch job and I found a much more economical alternative to replacing the pressure plate with the same end result. It's a little more work, but still fairly simple if you're patient. If you have a shop press or 3 large C clamps, compress the pressure plate to relieve the tension on the fingers. Pull the cotter pins and the pivot pins for the fingers and then carefully release the clamps or press. Take the plate portion into your local machine shop along with your flywheel to be resurfaced. My local shop did both parts for $50 - and they were real ugly when I took them in. Assuming that the springs are in good shape, it'll be as good as a new one after you put it back together. Just make sure you properly adjust the fingers after you've got it all reassembled to the flywheel.

Jeff, definitely check your free play first before anything else.
If you pull the engine, check your clutch, and flywheel for oil contamination. I replaced my clutch a few years back. Just the clutch disk. Have had no further problems. Do make sure your flywheel and p. plate is true, and not grooved. If they look OK, clean them up real good with brake cleaner and use them.

Parts aren't a problem you can get them. You can get Sparex parts through your local tractor dealer, you need the following numbers:-
Clutch cover is S60802
Clutch plate is S60639
Thrust Bearing is S65334
Pilot Bearing is S40734
You wont know what condition the clutch is in until you split the tractor, it could be "blued" through overheating or scored through the clutch plate having worn down to the rivets. The Thrust bearing will have been running if the pedal adjustment was wrong so it will need replacing and the pilot bearing in the middle of the flywheel, change that too as it is probably very old and they are cheap enough.
It is ok to change just the plate if there is no visible damage to the clutch, usually it will show if it has been overheated. But do change the bearings.

I was looking at the archives again, seems some of you guys have parts books that tell what will interchange. Right now I've just got the I.T. shop manual, but plan on getting the factory manuals. So will the 8N 9N clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing interchange? If they will it'll save me alot of money, that can be spent on other parts. Thanks jeff

John they are so small I can't see anything, and I can't figure out how to make them bigger, could you email them to me. Your post in the archives back in Oct. 05 is one of the ones I was talking about. Thanks jeff

NAPA has them and you can get by with just a clutch BUT only if you pp has not been over heated and all springs are good and the fly wheel is good very good . but the best is to replace clutch and the PP and get the fly wheel milled even with a new PP you are only doing half the job if you don't do the fly wheel. just had the fly wheel done for a case and was 16.00
