Purchased a water temp gauge for my TO-20 at the MF dealer and plan to install this week. Should I use teflon tape or coat the threads with anything or just tighten carefully?

Mike, the threads are not actually the sealing surface on the water temp. probe. You have a little flange going around the probe, that flange bottoms out on the bottom of the threaded port on your manifold. You should have a flat machined lip on the bottom of the port to mate-up with flange on the probe. The ferrule that threads down in on top of the probe pushes the 2 mating surfaces together and makes the seal.

Clean the bottom flat in the port real good so it is clean and flat. You can use some goop around the mating surfaces of the probe and bottom of the port. Don't need any goop on the threads.

I always use Form-A-Gasket #2 on threads in applications like this. 3 reasons. It will help seal the joint. It remains pliable, non-hardening and it keeps the joint from seizing. If you ever have to get back into it you can without tearing stuff up.

Mike,
George is correct about the threads not being the sealing surface. I have found though, that these 50 plus year old tractors have some wear in places. When I had a TO-20, the temp guage bulb would not quite seal. I presume it was uneven pressure on the bulb. A little extra sealing sure doesn't hurt. Anything this old can always use a little help. I know I'm older than these tractors and I can always use a little help. Glad it worked for you.
