My '48 TE 20 really needs a paint job and I am considering a full sand blast, etc. One outfit wanted $1800 to do the job - not affordable or even reasonable. Can any of you share your experiences on this subject? Could I blast and paint it myself? What hazards are involved when sand or media blasting?
I appreciate any info. Thank you.

Sandblasting stinks!!! I sandblasted my fenders and I still have sand coming out of the cracks between the brace and the skin. Do not sandblast anything that has a gasket inside or cracks where sand can hide. It will show up again when you paint. You will regret it. I bought a cheap 4" grinder from Harbor Freight ($9.95) and a 3 or 4" cup brush. I also bought a 4" flat brush to fit the grinder. It worked great. I got 95% of the crud off. The rest I had to get with scrubby pads and elbow grease. I washed her down with prep-sol from the paint store and painted her with acrylic enamel. People on this site recommend against the TSC paint as it fades in a year or two. If you are going to go to all of the work to do it once, I would recommend that you spend $100 and buy acrylic paint. I bought a cheap set of three HVLP guns and a pressure guage (about $85 total) from the paint store. I hooked them to my little 30 gal 5hp compressor and I am very pleased with the results. Many purists stick with the old Ferguson gray but for me, it is just too plain and too much gray. I have a 1951 TO-20 which I pressure washed, degreased, sanded and wire brushed to paintable condition. I removed the hood, fenders, seat, foot boards and most everthing else that made the job easier. I did this over the winter a little at the time. In fact, it is a work in progress, almost done. I chose three colors. I used a good automotive primer from dupont in spray cans; in fact, all of my paint was in spray cans. The body of the tractor is "cast iron gray" available at most auto parts stores. The hood and fenders are massey ferguson red with the wheels and seat massey ferguson flint metallic silver bought at the MF dealer. I bought new emblems off this website and the tractor looks great. Again, my intent is not to show the tractor but the paint combinations really look good on this tractor. Best of luck to you.

Hi Dennis. I own a 1952 TEA-2085 she was in poor shape when I got her. After I gave her an overhaul, new plugs, points, wires, new coil, re-built the starter & alternator, put in a good heavy duty battery. I decided that she needed a paint job. I went to TSC Hardware Store and bought 10 spray cans of Ferguson Grey. I hand sanded the old girl and applied the paint. Took 2 coats , but I have to say she looks good. Now she's not show condition by any means but I have no desire to show her, She's a workin tractor. Just my thoughts,, good luck Barry
