Im looking at tractors. First purchase..First choice 8n but I see these Ferguson TO/TE20"s around. Have they got enough power to do the job? (IN upstate NY) Im looking to: Back blade snow/Compost,Post Hole auger, and front bucket for manure and that. 4 acres hobby farm. Just basics...small 1/2 acre garden to plow. Will this tractor be big enough or am I underpowered. Only want to buy ONCE so to speak. The fords 9,2,8n"s are all 30hp. But again..alot of 20"s out there..is that because people are finding they are underpowered?? More concerned about front bucket??
Thanks to ALL...LONG time Lurker, first time post.

I do all the things you describe easily with my TO-20, except the front end loader. I have a rear scoop, which I use for manure - works great.

I run a 12" auger on my P.H. digger, run it at ~idle speed and can dig a hole to full depth in clayey soil in no time, barely bogs down my TO-20.

N's don't have 30 HP. They have about the same as a TO-20. You need a Jubilee or NAA/600 to get into the 30HP range on a Ford.

If the front end loader is real important to you, see Jerry's comments. You will pay at least double for a TO-35 as you will for a TO-20/30.

Around here, N's seem to sell a bit higher than TO-s, just because they are a Ford. Take advantage of that and get a Fergy - the flip top hood alone makes the TO better than a N... just my humble opinion.

The Ferguson brand has the same or a little more power than the Ford N series tractors they are basicly the same tractor.

The points JerryMT brings up all apply to the Ford 9N, 2N, and 8N also.

You'll probably get as many opinions about the the answer to this questions as there are people who reply. With the exception of the front end loader, the TO-20 will probably be adequate for the job. It doesnn't have live PTO so that means for the hydraulics on the 3 pt(or anywhere else) the pto must be engaged and when you step on the clutch pedal the pto and hydraulic pump stops. So it's really not convenient for loader work but many people make do with them. If you are going to use a rotary mower off the pto, you'll need an add on overunning clutch (ORC) for safety.
If loader work is really important for you, I'd recommend a TO-35 of MF35, or even something newer, as they have live hydralics. They also have more HP.(TO-20 has about 27 belt hp, TO-30 about 31 belt hp and TO-35 has about 35 belt) hp.)I have a TO-30 and I use it for hauling an irrigation pipe trailer, plowing snow off a half mile of driveways with a back blade and light grading and scraping. My workhorse tractor is a Ford 4610 with a front end loader. It all gets down to how convenient you want to make your chore work. If you are a working stiff that has a limited time, I'd recommended a newer machine with live or independent pto and 35-40 hp. If your retired and chore time is less critical for you, the TO-20, and -30 series of tractor will do almost all you want it to do but will be marginal for a loader work. Of course initial cost must also be considered as well as maintenance cost and time. The older tractors, especially the ones that have not been properly maintained, can become a maintenance burden but they have a low initial cost and the parts are generaly available. The newer ones are generally in better shape but also cost more initially.

I know I haven't answered our question directly but I hope this discussion has given you some additional things to consider before you make a purchase. Good Luck!

There is insignificant differences between the performance of these three Ford and Ferguson tractors.. they all have about 120 cu.in.... none have live PTO.. no live hydraulics, all have CAT I 3 pt... all have 4 speed 1 reverse.. (I think the 8n has postition control on the hydraulics, but this is not a big deal and can be added to the Fergusons...) None have power steering.. All work better with a loader if a front mount pump is added.. For slightly more power, consider the Ferguson TO-30 at 129 cu.in.

As a working tractor, however, I would look just a few years later at the Ferguson/MF 35, 40, 135, 50, etc and the Ford 600, 800 series.. Not much more power, but live hydraulics, live PTO, power steering available, six forward speeds, two reverse...

The TE-TO-20 should have enuf power for you. We had an F-10 Farmhand loader setting on our TE-20.
We loaded manure, staked hay and unstaked hay. That is removed hay from the stacks and loaded the hay rack. We never had a loader tractor with power steering or live pto and got along just fine.
