TED20 Knocks at idle

I have just finished a lengthy rebuild of my TED20 Petrol/Paraffin engine, and now it knocks at idle. I have replaced the pistons, liners, big/main bearings, timing chain, oil pump ignition points, skimmed the head etc. The oil pressure is a steady 30 - 40psi. However when I let the engine idle slowly eg approx 400 rpm, it makes a frequent - knock knock knock pause..... .knock sound. It disappears when i open the throttle slightly, doesn`t knock when i rev it up or drive up a slope to make the engine work, and is most noticeable when the engine is properly warmed up. It is a relatively gentle sound at the moment and by using a listening stick it seems to come from either the lower engine or the front but is difficult to pin point. What could this be? I thought it would be as good as new. I would be very grateful for any help you could give me.

I have a TO20 with a gas continental engine that has a knock similar to what you describe. It appeared after I did an engine overhaul. That was in 1972. It has had this gentle knock all this time and I have used it that way for over 30 years. I was told by an old tractor mechanic that it is end play in the cam shaft. Apparently, it isn't critical because I have used this tractor alot mowing grass, brush hogging, grading, plowing etc.

Do you have the standard engine in your Ferguson. If so, this may not help you, but a number of years ago my TO-20 continental engine also had a knock in the front at idle. I found out that the front cam bearing had too much clearance. Actually the cam runs right in the block without an installed bearing. This engine had a lot of hours on it. Anyway with the rocker arm cover removed, I found out that when running the engine at an idle, I could make the noise go away if I pushed down and put pressure on the front rockers in the right place. This seemed to keep the camshaft from klunking up and down on each revolution.

This type of noise can be a real pain to pin down. Good news is, its unlikely to be major (first thought was wrong size BE shells, but reading rest of our post - no.) So what could it be? Piston slap - maybe. SE bush (I always replace these on a rebuild - many don"t) but unlikely - that would be a gentler tapping. Sure you got all the BE caps mated with their respective rods & torqued up? Is your crankshaft endfloat within spec? Only other suggestion is either camshaft endfloat or a dodgy tappet (camfollower).

Could the flywheel be loose? I'm not familiar with that tractor, but something might be loose inside. A loose flywheel will make that noise. Or, if there is a balancer, or the pulley on the front of the crankshaft, it might be loose!

I would pull the pan, at any rate.... See what you can do to recreate the noise.
