Update on Massey Harris Ferguson TO-35 Fred OH

Well we tore into the TO-35 yesterday and when we took the timing cover off, we found the problem immediately. The nut on the end of the camshaft had the threads stripped and was letting the camshaft thrust back and forth. Sure played havoc with the distributor. It has about a quarter inch of end play in it now and will dent the metal strip on the rotor button or break it. We found the nut for sale at Central Tractor for $8.99 and will put in a new woodruff key in the cam gear and button it up probably next weekend. Also got to do something with the distributor. Maybe I can remove the gear and make a shim to bring it back to about .005 to .010" end play, haven't looked at it yet. Will keep the board informed on the progress, thanks to all who pitched in with their knowledge. L8R----Fred

Fred, read about your findings with the stripped threads on the cam. I took mine apart yesterday... when the timing cover came off, 3 balls from the governor came out with it. The governor has 2 problems, the slotted retainer that holds the balls & the plate that fits between the cam nut and the gear had their centers partially broke out of them...we found a piece in the oil pan. Since the nut tightens against this plate the nut was also loose. Even though the nut was loose, I pulled on the cam (with the rocker assembly pulled off) and could not get any thrusting of the shaft. The cam gear was on pretty tight and seemed to keep the shaft tight. Some cam lobes are worn...and the distributor gear is chewed up. I am going for a new cam & new lifters from Quality (central tractor) a package deal for around $200. I was wondering if you looked at the backlash in your timing gears? I measured mine with feeler gauge and got about .012 slop. The IT manual says ther should be .002 slop, and also says that undersized and oversized gears are (or were) available to get the backlash to a number stamped on the front of the engine block? I looked over the block and could find no such number. The only thing I found under the cam gear was the letter "S". I'm leaning towards replacing the crank and cam gears to reduce this backlash. Any opinions would be appreciated.
