I have a sputtering then dying TO-20 that I can not figure out. It always starts right back up. I got some good advice earlier and I checked the distributor and it seemed tight. Pulled plug on bottom of carb and fuel flows out. I rebuilt the carb and it acts the same. I can kinda keep it running if I run on full check. Adjust the carb and it makes no difference. I am really baffled. Thanks for any advice

I ran into an issue very similar a few months ago. My issue was that the tractor would run all without a load at all throttle positions, but I couldn"t make it to the end of the driveway. I rebuilt my carb several times, replaced distributor cap and wires and even had my local tractor shop take a look.

I last things I tried that ended up solving the problem was soaking the carb for 24 hours and then running a wire through all of the inlets and air ports. During the last rebuild I also replaced the float, and the last item which I think has the biggest impact was rolling back the govenor and then retuning.

YOu say you pulled the plug on the bottom of the carb and fuel flows out. How much and how long. A steady stream for over a half minute?

Have you checked the fuel strainer screen at the Card. It is in the elbow joint where the fuel line comes into the carb.

I hope this doesn't sound incorrect , but when the carb was rebuilt did you use the correct settings on the idle and power jet screws? I had some problems with my TO30 after I had rebuilt the carb and needed to tweek the settings a little.

Good luck

Have you checked to see if you have a good, fat, bluish spark? If you do,is your carburetor adjuted propely? You may also have manifold leak or a leak at the carbuetor attach flange to the intake manifold. Make sure that you have a tight seal on the gasket at the attach flange. Let us know what you find when you check these things out.

Have you replaced your condensor? Sometimes a bad one can cause this kind of symptom. it happened to me. Finally my father-in-law, who is a wise old self-taught mechanic told me to try a replement. It worked!

Sounds like an ignition problem to me too.
Replace condenser and points (cheap). Double check you point gap = .020 Too wide or too tight will cause poor spark. Sometimes they slip.

Clean connections to coil and to distributor while you are at it. Hopefully that will fix your problem.

You say you can keep it running on full choke. Unlikely to be an ignition problem then. Have you checked in-line fuel filter and fuel tank cap for venting?
