TE 20 idle speed problem

Problem with idle speed began after a carb. rebuild.
With the throttle at its lowest setting, the engine speed is probably 100 or 200 rpm
above standard, which I believe is 400 rpm.
If I push the rod from the governor to the carb. throttle arm back toward the rear of the tractor, the rpm drops down. The idle set screw is off the stop.
Id rather have a root canal than start messing around with the governor. It has never given one moments trouble in over 20 years, so I am hoping the fix is easy. Im thinking maybe I could just adjust the rod from the governor to the throttle arm on the carb.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Don't alter the length of the governor rod to the carb. until you have tried what I mailed earlier. Have I sent you the information for resetting the governor on this engine, I can't find it in the file if I have but then again I have sent it out so many times just recently that I may have overlooked it. Mail me if you need it.

Slacken the clamp just in front of the thermostat housing on the long rod from the dash and put the open end of the spanner around the rod from underneath the rod and lift the spanner so it takes out the play in the rods, then tighten it up again. Don't slacken the nuts on the clamp too much only just enough so that you can move the clamp. I hope I got that right, its easy to do but difficult to describe to someone else...lol. mail me if you have problems.

Thank you, John.
I am not clear on what you mean by "thermostat housing", but once I get into it, it may become clear what you mean.
I won"t be doing this today, though, since it"s cold enough to freeze the.....(fill in the blank).
Thanks again. I"ll post after I try your remedy.

Yeah I got what you meant and I did fill in the blank....lol The thermostat housing is what the tank sits on at the front end and this long rod (the one you adjusted the spring on behind the air filter) passes through it, this clamp I refer to is part of the governor linkage and it is just forward of the thermostat housing. Stay warm.

I believe that's a Welldigger's BrassMonkey with a witch thrown in there somewhere.
Seriously, John, does the TO-35 adjust the same way? I never have gotten this thing to idle correctly.

A Welldiggers Brass Monkey....thats a new one....lol
Yes they all adjust the same way, if you need the information on how to set-up the governor, just email me so I have your address to send it to. If the engine will not idle it may be adjustment but it could also be drawing air at the manifold to head gasket or the carburettor to manifold gasket, usually in these instances you can hear it tending to run weak in the exhaust when it is idling. But the Continental engine governor does require setting with care to get it right, it isn't difficult to do, its just that you do have to watch the settings carefully.
