Looked at a friends tractor yesterday and it said Massey Ferguson 35 on decals on hood and had red and gray paint on it. Looking further at serial number said TO-35 S168877. Manufactured by Massey Harris Ferguson Co. Racine, Wisconsin, which makes it a 1956 model according to serial number column to the left. Was this tractor originally painted solid gray or red and gray? Also, the engine has a distinct knock which sounds like it is coming from the area below the distributor and the governor arm jerks back and forth on it when you bear a little pressure on it. It seems to run pretty smooth (without missing). It doesn't seem to make anymore noise when revving it up or putting a load on it. (brake locked and let out clutch in gear). The engine is a Continental Z 134 A500. Anyone had a similar problem or care to take a crack at this? I'm going down next saturday and not sure whether to take off pan or head or timing cover or all of the above. Looking for some educated guesses. Thanks, Fred

Read your problem, sounds something like my TO-35. My engine has a light rap in it, the governor was noisy, but now is completely shot, and I am breaking rotor caps inside my distributor, and even the thrust washer broke on the shaft of the distributor due to up-thrusting. Talking to people around here, they are all signs of "too much backlash in the timing gears". This sets up a vibration in the camshaft which destroys anything driven off of it. I haven't pulled it apart yet to check, but they said," the timing gears are the weak link in the Z-134 engine". I personally wonder if the cam shaft is thrusting. According to my manual, there is a thrust plate to limit movement to .003 - .007. I hope this helps.

I'm going down saturday and I think we're gonna tear into it and see if we can spot the problem. I will post the results of our find on sunday or monday if we open it up. Sounds like it is the same problem as you are having. I advised friend to not run it that way. L8R----Fred

If the Z134 is much like the Z129, and I suspect it is, it could be two things.

1) crankshaft thrust washers are worn allowing the crank to move forward and back. You might be hearing the shaft wacking on the main journal block castings.

2) the camshaft thrust is worn. I'm having a senior moment remembering how that was adjusted but I recollect there was adjustment on that too inside the front cover, I think.

The cam wacking back and forth is a lighter sound than the crank.

If it's the crank thrusters, it's a split it apart to fix job. The cam can be fixed by pulling of the front of the engine only (and maybe the head) - splitting is not necessary.

Try to check the crank end play by prying the crank shaft forward. See if there is much motion in it.
