I just bought a Ferguson two-bottom moldboard plow, model 14-A, serial #49975. It's in good shape and complete except the Coulter assembly for the lead plow is missing. Does anyone have any information on the year of production? Any ideas where I could find a replacement for the missing Coulter assembly? The man I bought it from said he plowed with it like it is and had no problems. What's a Coulter blade really do?

Try Scott at Sweigard Bros, in PA. You can find his posts in the archives. He has plow parts.

Mickey:

Leave a post over on the 9N 2N 8N forum. There's a couple of guys over there can get new or original used coulters. Get ready for sticker shock, though.

Jeff

In addition, it cuts the trash that might otherwise hang up on the moldboard leading edge and slightly reduces the pull because the leading edge is already cut. the leading edge on the moldboard will last a little longer, too, if it has a coulter doing the cutting. The Ferguson coulters also had scrapers. the "scrapers" on the coulter were actually not for scraping anything but were like little "plows" to help turn over the top level and bury the toplevel trash. they worked good too, when properly set... a real picture here (3-bottom)

Jim, thanks for the pictures and information. Who's the cool guy with the sunglasses piloting that rig? I'm going to keep checking around to see if I can find a replacement Coulter blade assembly. Thanks again.

If you've only got one coulter, it's better on the last furrow - as is. Coulters (discs or blades) are to help cut the edge of the furrow so it's clean - meaning less weeds likely to end up on top of work. Personally, I prefer disc coulters & breezers infront of main plow - but then again the Lemken two furrow I have is an excellent clean plow but has no coulters. Plow I liked best for clean, deep, work was the fergusan reversible.

Thanks, Gerard. I appreciate the information; it knocks a little more off the learning curve. I posted a reply to your response much earlier, but it hasn't shown up. Guess it's lost in cyberspace. Thanks again.
