ferg man, You antifreeze fills the block then "overflows" down the oil passages into the pan with a head gasket problem. When you say "pretty much all went into the oil pan"... hope you don't mean the block drained empty into the oil pan... suggesting a leaky sleeve seal, or worse in the bottom of the block. My recollection is the head gasket fits better one way than the other, how the studs line-up with the holes in the gasket seems to be the indicating factor. The key thing is to make sure all your ports in the block and head have a matching hole in the gasket, and you don't have, or don't cause any tears or kinks in the gasket during the install. Silicone sealer has it's place, not sure if the head is that place. It might be possible the silicone starts to cure before you can get everything set in place, and torqued down, causing poor seal or stressed (torn)gasket. The manual recommends "cup grease" or similar. Old timers have told me the grease helped the gasket "settle in evenly" when torqued down. I have used that copper head sealer spray stuff a couple times with success, and have heard several other guys say they bolt down the head dry.
