I just bought a TO35 that backfires (pops)every few secounds. The compresion test dry results are 125, 125, 145, 100. I tested the last one (#4) wet and it went to 125. I guess it must be rings for that one. I was hopeing it would be valves for an easyier fix. I did find a broken rotor, piece off it's side. Any thoughts Thanks

First of all, did you do the compression test with the engine at operating temperature and with the throttle plate wide open? If you did then I suppose your numbers are accurate. I wouldn't worry about immediately doing an overhaul cuz even the low cylinder is not that bad. To me a "backfire" is a sharp, loud, noise almost like a 22 rifle being fired. A pop is like a cylinder misfiring so I'm not sure I understand what you mean by a "...backfire(pop)...". I would check the ignition system (fat, bluish spark) and timing, paying particular attention to the mechanical condition of the distributor. A lot of these distributors have worn shaft/bushing that causes misfire. If your ignition system and your distributor are fine, make sure the carb is properly adjuted because an improper mixture can cause misfire. I also agree that the valves may be a problem since there is a "pop" in the exhaust. Could be a burned valve or a carbon deposit.

Bet you have old gas, the intake valves gummed up and sticking slightly. #4 runs hot, always seems to be a tad lower in compression.

Fresh gas with a couple of shots of 30 wt oil and work the snot off it. Then do your compression test.

Next time you comprssion test, loosen plug 2 turns, then install wires and run for just a second to blow the carbon flecks out. May hang up a valve and give you false low readings.

Having checked ignition, I'd still check to see if there's a broken valve spring. Worn / stuck rings may produce many symptoms, but 'popping' isn't one of them.

I did forget to open the throttle all the way. How much difference will that make?
