TE20 carb/starting problems.

My TE20, rescued after years rusting on a beach,is getting to the stage where the engine should run. Ignition now fine, will fire for few revs on a 'Quick Start' spray, but refuses to run or even spit on the carb with petrol.Have had the carb to bits several times, fitted over- haul kit, everything seems fine, but no go! Liquid petrol eventually runs from the intake, afraid of an explosion or fire if I keep cranking. Any suggestions or should I think about a new carb??

Is it a TE20 with a Continental engine or a TEA20 with a Standard Engine, I was just thinking again about your problem and if it is a TEA I may have an answer for you.

If, as you say it has been lying on a beach then most likely the carburettor will have corroded and possibly no fuel is reaching the cylinders, check the plugs for getting wet if they do then there is fuel but it is not igniting. you say it will run a few revs if you spray it, so it does sound as though there isn't any fuel getting to it. The only other thing that comes to mind is are you using fresh gasoline, not some that has been lying around all winter.

After cranking for a while have you tried pulling the spark plugs to see if they are damp/moist/wet with petrol? What work have you done to the engine/tractor? Have you tested the compression? Hope this helps, SAm in NS

Thanks for advice, I will check to see if plugs wet on next starting attempt. The carb is a Zenith 24 on the Standard engine and I've done a full recon of the carb, new gaskets etc, checked jets, float.. all seems OK.
The engine was in a bad state originally, sump full of water, pistons seized, but now all is turning over fine and fires well for a few revs on Cold Spray. I will check the compression, though I did a full job on the valves when I had the engine down.
