TE-20 Here's my story..

Early in December i was given a Ferguson tractor that i had no idea what it was. I thought it was a TO20 because the TE's are UK made. Little did i realize that they did send the TE's to USA for awhile. My serial number is destroyed so i had no idea what i had.

The tractor has leaky axle seals. The seals for the TO20 did not work so now i'm wondering which ones i need. Also is there a better place to get the #3795 cone bearings rather than $24? Also does the TE20 need an inside seal? Mine had sure seals on it but they leak anyway.

The brakes, i ordered what are called "turning brake linings" for the TE20. How do i replace the oil soaked linings on my current pads?

Also what is the correct Fram filter # for the Z120? I bought a 134PL but its alot smaller than the one that was in there.

Thanks for the info.

If anyone has a good TE-20 site for pictures and info that would be great.

I pulled the seal out of the hub and it looks like i can reuse the retaining ring on that side. It wasnt attached to the seal. BUT the seal that was in there is larger in outside diameter than the seal i bought. The part number on the seal is National Made in USA "6214". Any ideas on where to get that?

If the bearings are worn then "sure Seals or any other seals can't work. You need good bearings and then replace the seals. According to the parts list the outer oil seal (looks like 9908) fits all TO20/30 and TE20/TEA. If it is indeed a TE20 then it didn't have an inside seal originally unless it was after serial 325,001 (1953)and the last TE20 was number 48,000 (1948) but you could fit "Sure Seals" as they normally do work. Just make sure that the rear end of the tractor doesn't have too much oil in it or no matter what seals you have it will leak onto the brakes. The brake shoes are the main brakes but you can operate independently to enable you to turn sharply into row-crops. To change the linings you can buy either complete shoes with linings or a kit of linings and rivets to replace the oil soaked ones. Sparex do a lining kit part # S4163 that should be available from your local tractor dealer, but linings from a later model will fit but not the shoes. I don't know the bearing that your refer to (3795)so I can't help you with that.

The seals i got for the outer dont fit over the larger tapered area of the shaft. The ones that are in the hub appear to have a metal lip so they dont fall into the hub (right?). The seal i got was just flat across the top. The tractor had sureseals on it when i got it so i'm not sure if they are aftermarket or not. I cant read my serial number.

The 3795 is an actual Timken part number. I wanted to see if i could get them cheaper than $25 which seems steep for one roller bearing.

The "Sure Seals" were never fitted from new so they have been fitted at sometime later. It sounds like you were given the wrong seals if they wont go over the shaft. The MF part number for the outer seal is 890640M1 or Sparex part# S41416, you can order Sparex parts from your local tractor dealer.They also do the "Sure Seal" too part S61512, but I daresay you wont have a problem getting them anyway. From what you say they have given you all the wrong seals, they may have mistaken which end of the axle shaft is the "outer"...it is the one nearest the wheel mounting flange. If they thought it was the other way around that would make sense as to the seal sizes you say you have been given.

$24 is cheap I think... (and probably Chinese..) the Timken 3795 from NAPA is $49.39 (BR3795), and from DavisTractor ~$40, and about the same from MF dealer.. and you will also need the retaining collars which if you get from MF dealer (probably Timken) will be $26 each... or go for the Chinese (~$13) on this one... it doesn't wear out... Welcome to the TE-club.

I too have a TE and love it, because it is not a run of the mill TO-20.

The filter is a #1107 Wic filter. These are availalble from NAPA. Also, go under the NAPA Gold brand name also #1107. These are the same as the TO-20.

The basic differences in the TE and the TO are:
Electrical system: TE- Lucus TO-Delco. They are not necessarily piece part interchangable.

Same engine, thus same parts for the engine.

TE has a single piece steering column and transmission shift cover plate. TO is seperate.

TE has a cast aluminum transmission housing. TO is cast iron.

There are differances in the breaks and axels as you are finding out.
