Oil level in air cleaner

Please can someone clarify where the oil level should be in the air cleaner reservoir?
The cup (as I call it) has no markings, but it does have a crease in the metal all around, but I am not sure if this indicates where the level should be. Also, the cup has an inner ring; should I fill the whole cup to the top of this inner ring?
I guess I am showing my ignorance here, bit I need to be sure so I don't overfill.
Thanks to all.

In regards to the air cleaner, could you tell me how to remove the mesh(for cleaning), I can't see how it comes apart and I don't believe that in that day (1953) they would use and throw away a entire metal unit! Any help on this would be great.

It doesn't come apart, you remove the cleaner from the tractor and immerse it in a bucket of Gas or TVO (depends which side of the pond you are for that.)(not diesel as it is too oily), and leave it overnight. This softens the dirt and will wash out just rinsing it or using a hose, then allow it to drip dry, this should be done about twice a year.

It should be filled to that "crease" that you mention, it holds 3/4 imp. pint.Use the same oil that is in the engine. It is called a "cup" or a "bowl" depending on where you come from. No need to fill it anymore than the "crease" as it draws the oil up-wards into this filter when the engine is running.

Should be an arrow pointing to that crease you mention.

Couldn't say without going to shed to take a look. Provided 'mud' that collects in bottom is cleaned out regularly & oil refilled to crimp line (about same level as inner holes), it'll be right. It's designed so oil is drawn up to lubricate mesh, whilst larger particles of dirt head straight into oil.
