I have the distributer out and need to put it back in a TO30. I have read the post and see what has been said about getting the #1 piston TDC and pointing the roter to the #1 and then puting it in but is their a more defined way for a DUMMY like me. I don"t evan know whitch piston is the #1 can someone tell me that? it would be a big help. And what if I still get it in the wrong position when I stab the dist. What will it do to the tractor. THANKS

I have been a mechanic for a lot of years and I have found that the only stupid question is the one someone is too proud or stupid to ask. It is a lot better to ask than to break something. The info already given should get everything going again. Have a happy Ferguson new year.

Thanks. It seems like its a dumb question but it may as well have been how to take the engine apart for me.

The cylinders are number 1 through 4 from front to back. Just slowly follow the instructions. The TO-30 is not the Space Shuttle or an F-22! The worse that can happen is the tractor won't start because you're 180o out of time. Just be patient and have some self confidence. And ask for help if you're not sure as you begin the process.
Once you get # 1 on the compression stroke (as determined by removing the spark plug and cranking until you feel the pressure build up on your finger covering the spark plug hole) you only need to rotate the crankshaft pulley until the timing marks show at the hole under the starter.
