Need some advice on setting crank end play

Howdy, y"all.
I"m trying to set the end play on my crank to make some progress on my rebuild and I"m having some trouble. When I torque the crank pulley bolt down to, say, 30 ft-lbs the crank pretty well seizes up and the end play is too small to be measured on my dial indicator. Clearly end play is set way too tight here, but I get this same result even with no shims at all. This is a TO-30 and I am using a rebuild kit purchased from here at YTMag. I"m using the flanged front main bearing and bronze thrust washer on the front. Here"s the order I"ve got the parts going on the crank: thrust washer on the block, then thrust plate, then timing gear, then oil slinger, then pulley, washer, and bolt. Can anyone suggest something for me to try or point out what I"m doing wrong? I"d greatly appreciate any input.

I just finished doing that.You need to add shims.

Sounds like you're trying to do this job without a shop manual and a parts manual! Bad dog!

The order you have listed is incorrect. For the TO-30 there are two thrust washers and a thrust plate plus a pin that is used in the outer thrust washer and the thrust plate.
This is the correct order per the Ferguson Parts Manual.The order of parts starting from the crankshaft end is inner thrust washer, shim(s), outer thrust washer,crankshaft thrust plate, gear, oil throw off washer(slinger)then the pulley. You add or subtract shims to get the clearance required (0.003-0.007")

I'm afraid not. I've got a factory shop manual (which isn't much help on this part of job aside from giving me the proper specs for clearances) but no parts manual. A parts manual would have undoubtedly been helpful.

No doubt others will correct me if I"m wrong, but I thought more shims were required to gain clearance, not less - but it"s a year or so since I did one & I can"t guarantee I"m right.
