I just bought a 1953 TO30 that makes a noise that sounds like a grinding sound when the engine is turned over. I have not tried to start it. When I bought it I was told about the problem. So I have never heard the engine run. At first I thought maybe it had spun a main since the noise is not intermitten. It has been cold here in Dubuque, Iowa, so a couple of days ago I jacked up the rear wheel and turned the engine over with a wheel in 4th gear. Now it sounds like the noise is in the bell housing. Do I look further in the bell housing or pull the pan? Anything sound familiar to any of you have experiences similar to this problem. I will probably pull the starter today and see what I can see. Thank you for any insight you may share. Jim

Could be as simple as the starter stuck in mesh. Remove starter and turn it over again. Have you taken the fan belt off to isolate any problems (eg water pump) up front? You"d be surprised how noise heard at one end of an engine transpires to come from the other. Doesn"t sound like crankshaft to me.

When I bought mt TO, it was making a rubbing/grinding noise from the bell housing also. I pulled the starter switch on top the housing (it had been bypassed and solinoid installed by prev. owner), I found the linkage between the shifter and the starter switch had fallen into the bell housing and was rubbing on the flywheel. I ran it like that for a couple years before I split the tractor and removed the linkage.

one possibility is that the starter ring on the
flywheel has migrated back and is rubbing on the
bottom of the bell housing. Remove the panel behind the oil pan and look at it. I had the same problem on my to-30, if that is it other than splitting the tractor its not to serious

If the starter gear has migrated back, then someone has replaced the flywheel with an early model flywheel. I had a ring gear come off my TO-30 because someone had replaced the original one with an early model flywheel. The early model flywheels had thd the ring gear sweated on from the rear. Every time the starter was engaged, the ring gear was forced back slightly until it came off. Ferguson redesigned the flywneel with a lip on the backside and sweated the ring gear on from the fron, thus solving the problem.
