I have a TO30 with a steering problem. When I turn the steering wheel, either way, it will raise up about an inch out of the housing. I can't seem to see what would be loose or missing that would cause that. I also can't seem to find the repair parts, bearings , seals etc for that top end equipment. Any help and direction would be greatly appreciated.

Gary

It is a bearing problem as Jerry has told you, either they need adjusting or they have collapsed. Pull the steering wheel off (this can be hard to do you really need a puller) and check the two thin nuts above the top bearing for correct adjustment. There should be no lift in the shaft, just take out any play. You can still buy the bearings etc. for this from this site (YTMAG) Make sure that there is only oil in the box. Lube the top bearing and most likely the top felt seal will be shot, so it will need a new one to keep out water and grit.

If necessary you may be able to buy an entire steering box assembly, used, from a boneyard. They are not available new. I don"t know if you can get new bearings or not. The bearings will go bad if water gets inside. Also if that happens and it freezes, it can damage the box as well.

If I understand you correctly, the steering wheel/steering shaft rises up from the uppper housing assembly when you turn the steering wheel. In looking at the parts manual, there are a couple of bearings(one at the top and one at the bottom next to the pinion gear) and a pair of retaining lock nuts that retain the shaft in the upper steering housing assembly in reaction to the thrust from the sector gear. Either the lower bearing is shot or the lock nut has backed off. If I'm correct, you should be able to pull up on the steering wheel and feel some motion. If it's just that the lock nuts came loose, you'll have to remove the steering wheel to get to them. You'll have to remove the upper housing assembly to get to the lower bearing
