TEA-20: Converting Starter to 12V

I've had my TE-20 (TEA 157325) since '81 and I converted all but the starter to 12V about 10 years ago. I get it going using a booster cable from the 12V battery to the 6V starter. This works fine in the summer but when I need to plough snow the old starter needs the brushes cleaned every second or third start. This is getting to be more work than I want to do out in the cold. I asked a local (recommended) alternator shop to convert the starter to 12V but was told they couldn't get the parts. It's a LUCAS starter (numbers on the casing below)
25519F 9 50
M418G V139 1 6V

My questions: Can my LUCAS starter be converted to 12V, either with available parts or by having it rewound? Is there a 12V starter available out there that would fit my Ferguson?

I happened across a 12 volt Delco Remy starter off a Ferguson TO-20 on e-bay. I won the bidding, installed it on my Grey Menace and it's working great.

Most people leave the starter at 6 volts when they convert the rest of the tractor to 12 volts purely because of the cost. You could have it rewound as some have already done this, it is possible to get a new starter for it also, but is it costly, but if you still want to know, just ask and I will give you the details. As long as the engine is maintained and it starts easily you should have no problems using a 6 volt starter.

Hi Bill,

I have heard the same, that the starter normally should hold for a very long time used on 12 volt.

But, from what I understand it is very important that the engine is in good shape and starts easily and fast. That way the starter motor does not have to run for a long time...

Just hook it up and go. It won"t hurt your starter to run on 12 volts. Might make it last longer since you won"t have to crank as long to get the engine started. I have an MF35, MF50, and a Ford 841 all running on 12 volt with their original starters Search the archives for 12 volt and you"ll get a better explanation from some of the guys who understand electricity. Good luck.
