Red or Grey?

I presently have a 51 Ferguson TO20 which is painted Gray. I've seen Red ones. Why are these tractors painted Red or Gray. Any information on this paint question would be appreciated.

It should be all gray and to me it looks better but the reason a lot of them were painted red is to make the neighbor after 1958 think you had gotten a new tractor as they were then the Massey red when new, same reason the 9N-2N Fords were painted Red and light gray after 1948 was to make that neighbor think you had gotten a new tractor untill 1965 when they started doing it with the blue. The dealers also would repaint used tractors in like that to get people to buy them thinking thet were getting a newer model than they actually were getting. Years ago I had a grey TO30, also a Ford Red & grey NAA, and I presently hase a 41 9N all grey and a 44 2N that my Dad bought new that he painted the red and grey because he liked the color better and when I repainted it I kept it the same red & grey in his memory. Wish I had that TO30 & NAA back.

for the same reason many 9n's, 2n's and 8n's are painted ford blue.

To-20 Fergies came from old Harry's factory painted all gray, much like Ford 2N and 9N tractors. I have seen well done restorations where the tractor was painted all gray, and it looked nice. I have seen some all gray with the small parts like starter and generator detailed and the wiring harness not painted, and they looked nice. I have seen some painted with red hood, fenders, wheels, seat, etc. and gray running gears and they looked nice. I have seen some painted red with small parts chromed, like mine, and that REALLY looks nice. Purists will frown at anything that is not all gray. I personally think all gray looks too much like a crappy old N Ford. Bottom line is it is your tractor, and a pretty good machine it its day and this. Just enjoy it and keep it running and preserve a piece of history. My two cents.....P
