Matt
great pics, and great idea to use a BBQ. A couple questions to help reduce my ignorance of brazing:
Do you V-out the crack before you braze?
Does brazing use a standard alloy rod, or are there different alloys for different jobs like with welding?

thanks
George

Matt, did you use a torch on that furnace brazing or do you have a heating cabnet to get the tempature up? Thanks Albert

I vee'd out the cracks before I brazed it, then used a torch to weld it.

Far as what rod I used - I dunno it was what was handed to me to use to weld it.

I used a gas bbq. Preheated it for about a hour. Welded the head some, let it warm up for awhile - did this 3 times. then let it cool for 3 hours. No cracks yet!

Heres the back side. I hadda braze both ends/ sides cuz it was cracked all the way threw.

I even started porting it and polishing the chambers some what too.

Hi, good idea to polish the chambers, more power, less heat transfered to the water, and makes it cleaner too.

Porting, are you going to race it ? Aren't you afraid of loosing low end torque ?

I know that some polish the ports too, but that give very little extra power, only suffers fuel consumption.

Racing tractor? hmmm good idea - should buy a sherman step up tho :)

Far as loosing low end tq- I dont think I will. Im not port it really drastic. The runners arent being enlarged or the bowls for that matter. All thats really being done is the the short turn and cleaning up the casting flaws/bumps.
Im trying to get it to flow consistant threw the lift range with some good velocity.

Dont think the bowls or the runners can hogged out too much anyways since the valves are so small ( dont wanna buy or make custom valves for a tractor that doesnt turn any rpm's) But theres other tricks that can be done - back cut the valves and do a good valve job.

I dont think I'll have to worry about fuel consumption either. Every motor I have ported so far has dont better on fuel so far. ( if driven sanely race stuff dont count tho :) ) Im also raising the compression some what which will help efficency
