TE 20 Air Cleaner Oil Specification

In cold weather like we"re having here in Northern Ohio, what is the proper weight oil to use?
My manual says 10 weight, thinned with kerosene if it"s below zero.
Where can one buy a straight 10 weight?
I had a lot of trouble starting up yesterday.Found air cleaner oil was like molasses, so probably choked the engine.
Any thoughts or experiences will be much appreciated.

Keep in mind all that oil is really doing is catching the dirt as it's thrown out of the incoming air by centrifigal force. The term "oil bath" is a misnomer. The air is not bathed in oil. Some dirt is caught in the oily mesh, and some as the air changes direction. Oil bath filters are most efficient at high volumes, and even then only about 1/4 as efficient as a good paper filter. When at low speed, the air changes direction gently, thus not throwing out much dirt.

I wonder if there"s a paper filter that can be retrofitted - even perhaps a nice K & N one?

I've seen a K&N filter on N's. Probably work on a Fergy too. If you don't get any good leads here, try over on the N forum.

Dennis, I'm in Central OH myself. I've started my TO20 down to ~-5 F and run it just fine running 10W30 in the air cleaner. In fact, I plowed snow for a while last Sunday, the temp. was in the high 20's. I have seen 10W20 oil at some auto parts places if your really looking for oil that thin.
Might want to try cleaning your filter and using 10W30. That straight 30Wt does get darn thick this time of year.

Any normal regular engine oil, 10W-30 or 10W-40 if you find, is fine to use.

If you use your tractor let us say as little as 5-10 gallons of gas every year, then after a year the air filter oil will be as you describe. It is the moist in the air that blend with the oil + all the dirt and dust, and the oil becomes like that. It is plain normal.

I would say, more or less no matter how little you drive your tractor, the oil will end up like that pretty soon.
I am not sure for the TEA 20, but for a FE 35 with diesel engine it is recommended to clean and replace the oil in the air filter every 10 hour, or as often as twice a day if someone lives in a very dirty area, I assume in a desert like area with a lot of sand and dust.

Not aware of a straight 10. Why not use 10 / 50? That = 10 unless it's hot, (when it equals a 50).Air cleaners don't get hot. Otherwise, more kerosene with a 20 or 30 grade.
