Bought a TO-30 last week.Because of bad battery and cables I only got it running long enough to get it loaded and home.I replaced the battery and cables and got cranked to let it run.It ran pretty well.As it warmed up I noticed oil on the lift chain behind the exhaust with puffs of smoke every few seconds. Is it a broke ring? What steps should be taken to find the problem and what rebuild kits should be used.

Now that you have it running, work it for awhile. A lot of these tractors sat around out in the weather for a while and things are gummed up. Change the oil and filter and put in fresh coolant (50/50 antifreeze/water), fresh regular gas, and replace the oil in the aircleaner cup. Warm it up and then run it through the rpm range with some load on it. After 5 hrs of use, run a warm engine compression check then come back and tell us what you found.

Hi Pitt

Gas may be old in the tank or new gas mixed with old gas.
Oil may be very old containing water or gas residues from previous floodings
Spark plugs may be old and causes bad combustion fumes
Check temperature after warmup to assure that it has a thermostat
If it was sitting from long time few valves may be stuck

My suggestions are:

Be sure you have all new gas (super for now) in the tank
Change the oil and filter put non detergent oil (for now)
Change the spark plugs and spark plugs wires
Change points and condenser
After these changes run the engine for minimum one hour and see if the temp gauge indicates normal temperature.

After that you may take compression test.

Water condensation in engine and exhaust system mixed with bad combustion byproducts caused by one or all previous statements may produce lookalike oil at the exhaust.

I think that a serious engine evaluation cannot be made just by running the engine for few minutes. An ("apparently") worn engine gives sometimes good surprizes.

Anyway if the engine is realy worn and needs rebuilt only the oil is not recuperable you will be able to reuse points plugs thermostat etc. As usual cheaper tries first....

Good luck !

You say puffs of smoke every few seconds. If it was worn pistons / rings or guides, I"d expect continuous smoke. Are you sure it"s not a plug missing? I"d give it some work to do, and re-evaluate the situation after.

Might be broken or just worn out rings. Checking compression in each cylinder, both dry, then again with a quirt of oil might provide some worthwhile info. Most rebuild kits are from Tisco, regardless who sells them, check around, prices vary a lot. I ended-up getting my rebuild kit from my local Massey dealer, they shipped for free so it was a few $$$ cheaper than most on-line parts places.
Decide up front if you are dong a full rebuild, or just sleeves/pistons. The kit prices are cheaper than buying individual parts. You will save money in the long run if you get the full rebuild kit instead of buying a lower rebuild kit (sleeves/pistons), and an upper rebuild kit(valves, etc) separately.
