John: First I am not trying to argue. I think I missed something in searching for the correct fluid for the rear-end in my TO20. You advised Matt Jirgens that you could also use 15W-30W multi-grade in his TO30. Is this just for the 30 or is it good for the TO20 as well? If it is good for both, the 15W-30W is a lot cheaper with GL1 being $30 plus for 5 gallons US. Do the detergents in the motor oil make a difference? I trust your comments. Thanks, Glenn

John(UK): Thanks for the clearification. I didn't want to be confused with that guy in Virginia (HaHa). I have always been confused with the vicosity designation for motor oil vs gear lube. I thank you for your help.

Bill B.: Thank you also for your added info. I have always believed that the more inormation the better.

Thanks again to both of you.
Glenn

Just an addition.

In the Norwegian operators manual they recommend either engine oil, or gear oil... but the engine oil is the first choice.
Above 4 centigrades, SAE 50, and below 4 centigrades, SAE 40.
If gear oil is used, they recommend SAE 90 above 4 centigrades, and SAE 80 below 4 centigrades.

I would like to add that in those days there were no such things in Norway at least as multigrade oils.

As John says, there is no engine oils produced today without any additives.

The detergents you are afraid of only works at very hot temperatures, like on the upper part of a piston, you will never get that temperature in the transmission.

Hi Glenn,I don't think you are trying to argue at all, I realise you are just asking a question to clarify a point. You will know we have had this question asked so many times that I thought it was about time we asked the people who should know the correct answer. I contacted Castrol oil here in UK and told them what we using and what it was for and that we would like an oil that was also suitable for low temperatures as this causes some users a lot of trouble. I mentioned the problems about GL1 and they told me that there is now no such thing as the original GL1 or straight mineral oil as we know it, as they all have some additives now. In view of the temperature problems we get they said that it would be far better to use a Multi-grade 15W-30 instead, it has some detergent properties and this would to some extent also stop the sludging problem we get, but the main cure for that is to change the oil every 12 months, no matter how many hours it has done as standing is as bad for the oil as it is working really hard.It is ok to use this 15W-30 Multi-grade in any of the tractors in the TE series/TO20/TO30/TO35/FE35/MF35 I have had some write to say that they can't get Castrol oil where they are, they don't need to use Castrol oil they can use their usual suppliers who will supply a Multi-grade oil 15W-30. I have made a few enquiries around here in the UK and I would think that nearly all if not all the dealers use Multi-grade in the transmission now.John
