All,
This has been eating at me for a while and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. On the intake side of my manifold on my TO-30 there's a 45-degree grease zerk threaded in. I'm guessing it didn't come from the factory that way. Gotta be leaking some air into the manifold. So, what do y'all think it was put there for? A manifold vacuum guage? Ingenious new way of starting with ether? Easy access for greasing those pesky squeaky spark-plugs?

And on a serious note, is it safe to put a threaded brass plug in that manifold, or am I just askineg for it to crack?

Ah, good information, fellas. That makes perfect sense. John, are those fittings you are talking about similar to a standard barb fitting?

Sorry Darren, You will have to translate that for me....(barb fitting?) It was the part that screws into the vacuum line in the cowshed but here it screwed into the manifold instead and you then attached the rubber hose from the milking pail and Bingo, one happy cow.

Yes I agree, they probably lost the original plug. In some parts of the world they attach a milking machine to it so they can milk cattle or goats or whatever rather than bring the cattle home each night.

Your zerk is probably the same size and thread as the pipe plug in my manifold. My bet is that the plug is lost .

you can replace that with a standard black iron, or galvanized steel plug. You could probably use brass in a pinch, but recommend sticking with the same metal as the manifold.
