TO30 Ignition switch

I think I have a bad switch on my TO30 Ferguson. It has 2 wires to it. Does that mean that the switch sends a signal to a relay switch and then to the solenoid?

Hi,

I think there is a little confusion on how to start your Fergie, not to worry I had to ask the same question. Put the key in the on position, usually turn clockwise. The gear shifter actuates the starter by pushing up to the "S" or start position and holding it there while it cranks over to start. The throttle should be near idle and hold the choke out while pushing the gear selector.

The TO-30, as originally configured, used no starter solenoid. The key switch merely closes the ignition circuit betweeen the battery, the coil, the distributor and ground. The starter is activated by the gear shift lever, which closes the switch on the bell housing and completes the circuit between the battery and the starter

To start the tractor, open the fuel valve on the tank, turn on the ignition switch then push the shift lever to the right and forward toward the S position on the tranny cover. This should activate the starter switch causing the engine to turn over and start. the choke lever is on the dash on the right hand side and if it's cold you may need to use it.

Thank you for your reply. I have a dead tractor I just purchased. So please tell me what to do with the gear shift once the ignition is on. I am a Farmall rasied guy and this is my first go with the Ferguson. Thanks in advance. Jim

Once it starts the lever will pop back when you release your hand. It is spring loaded. The switch itself is on top of the bellhousing and is adjustable. If necessary you can loosen the four bolts that hold it on and slide the switch forward or back to make better contact, as the case may be. That could even be your problem if the engine isn't turning over, or turns over sometimes and not always.

Are you refering to the switch that sits on top of the transmission housing in front of the steering assembly? If so, I believe one side of the switch comes from the key, and one side goes to the solenoid.

Originally equipped, there is no solenoid on a TO30. The starter switch is activated through the "S", reversse transmission rail. When the transmission shift lever is moved to the right and forward it pushes the shift rail to the rear and operates the mechanical linkage to the starter switch which is mounted inside the clutch housing under the battery. If it is not making contact it may need cleaning and adjusting.
