I know nothing about tractors but I was given one.
When lifting the rear blade, its jerkey, I found and checked a dipstick in the rearend, low on fluid.
What kind of fluid goes in it?

I want to get a manual on it, but all I have to go by is TEA 270656
I did a search and from what I found and think it is, is a 1952 TE 20

Any help would be great
Thanks

As Jim has told you the original oil was straight mineral oil 90W but you can now use 15W-30 Multi-grade, this is better if you are working in a cold climate as it will be thinner than the 90W. If you have water mixed with the oil(it will go whitish) look for leaks around the gear lever and under the Control Spring at the back of the seat.It will help if you fit a rubber boot around the bottom of the gear lever.
It is a 1952 TEA not a TE20, this has a different engine. It is possible that the jerking will not be cured even when you have changed the oil, but do that anyway and then mail again when you try it and tell us what it is doing.

I"ll let you know how it works.

Hi Don,
I found something suitable at WalMart in Ontario. I believe it says equal to MF1127A which is a Massey Ferguson spec'd oil for newer equipment, but which they use in place of the original stuff, which was MF1101 or maybe 1103. Anyway this stuff comes in a 5 gallon pail (or 18 litres or whatever they are now) which is almost enough to fill your tractor, but not quite.
Jim

WRONG OIL>>>DO NOT USE.
It should be GL1 specification not GL4 it is not suitable for this tractor. Use either GL1 90W or Multi-grade 15W-30 nothing else. The oil you have will damage the yellow metals used in the transmission.

If you see this,, Thanks. I saw your message before I added the oil so did not put it in.
Did some research and found the 90 oil that it needs and also bought a manual on the tractor.

DON,You don't say what you actually want. If you want the year for your tractor, if it is a TE it is 1949 if it is a TO it is 1952

Rear end, hydraulics, and transmission share the same oil; it's one big reservoir. Originally they used SAE90 GL1 (NOT hypoid gear oil) which, depending upon where you live, may be hard to find. There are good modern substitutes available, but don't throw hydraulic fluid in there. Other people on here will give more advice on that topic.
That dipstick is the one to use. But before topping up I might suggest draining out what's there, as there is a tendency toward water collecting in the gearbox via condensation, and the water, being heavier than oil, sinks. The hydraulic pump is at the bottom so it gets subjected to the water/oil mix, not good.
depending on how technical you are you may be interested in the original 460 page service manual from MF which is still available.
Your tractor is a British made Ferguson with a motor from the Standard Motor Company. I have a couple of these and have made a website that I hope will help fellow owners.
