Few questions.Just had the engine rebuilt now the old starter will barely crank enough to start the motor. To replace the starter do I need to remove the distributor? And if I am replacing the starter, should I consider converting to 12V? And if so what is involved with such a conversion. Thanks, very good site!

No need to r/r distributer to r/r starter. On the inside there are 2 flat copper straps soldered to the main cable stud. If you turn the stud tightening the power cable you won't have much of a starter. No need to go 12v if you keep the connections clean. battery, solenoid, starter.

Measure acid specific gravity, it maybe undercharged. How tight is the engine?, any chance the bearing clearance is too thin? Pull the plugs and see if it rips.
