Lube Leak

I bought a "project" TO30. Had been sitting for years. Motor was stuck; got it running. Steering was bad (ice in case busted housing, etc.); replaced steering with good used unit. Got it back together and running and lift working and seemed fine for about 30 minutes until it bagan to leak gear oil from front of transmission. Am I correct that there is no gasket at front of tranny? My manual doesn't show a gasket. Does this indicate a bad seal inside transmission? Am I going to have to split the tractor to fix this? It doesn't leak cold, but leaks pretty fast when warm. (No water in it - all gear oil; that's the good news.) Thanks for suggestions.

Had same problem!! Transmisson input seal IS LEAKING! You must split the tractor. Remove clutch release bearing and shaft, remove 4 bolts that hold main drive gear & shaft retainer. Remember to drain off some oil first. Seal is on the inside of the retainer. MF dealer can get you the seal $13 CDN. Quite an easy job to do. ciao!

Is it engine oil or tranny lube ????? It'd bet it's engine oil and the rear seal around the crankshaft is kaput. There is no gasket between the tranny and the engine. I suppose it is possible for lube to leak from the front of the tranny but IMHO it is far more likely to be engine oil and a damaged or worn rear crankshaft seal. No matter which it is, it's splitsville for your tractor.

No, it's gear oil, not engine oil. Could it be I overfilled the steering gear and it leaked all the way thru to bottom of tranny housing?

I guess so but I'd think you'd see it running down the side(s) of the gear box and bell housing. I've had my engine completely apart but never checked to see what kind of seal is on the front of the tranny. I guess I'll have to check the manual.

????? ????? ?
