I just bought what I was told was a TEA-20. What is the difference between the TEA-20 , TO-20 and the TE-20?

There are very few differances between these three tractors. The one major difference is that the TEA uses a Standard Motor Co. Engine whilst the TE, and TO use a Contenental Engine.

If you are looking for visual clues to verify what you have do this.

Look at the engine's left side. The standard motor has an external fuel fliter sticking out near the rear of the engine. The contenental motor will have the letters "Z120" embossed near the bottom center.

The TE20 came first, and was powered by an American-made Continental engine. The TEA20 was the same machine, except that it was powered by the British-built Standard engine. The TO series tractors were built in Detroit and were an "Americanized" version of the British TE tractors. For any more than that, I'll defer to John(UK).

Few differences really, brakes as Jim says 11" Bendix on TO 14" Girling on TE, Lucas electrics on TE Delco on TO, Cast Iron g/box hsg on TO Elektron on TE, taper roller bearings on TE g/box, some needle rollers instead of some rollers on TO. Gearbox top and steering box combined on TE, separate on TO, different selector forks on TO to TE. Clutch was Rockwell on TO & Borg & Beck on TE, Hood was different, Hood Locking different. Perhaps Jim can remember what else I am sure there are more differences, I must make a proper list ASAP

There are a number of more subtle differences too. The brakes are a different diameter (14" vs 11"), the gearbox cover and steering column are one piece on the TEA vs two on the TO, the electrical systems are different, the Lucas one being on the TE and the (Delco?) American one being on the TO, etc.
I know there are other things but I can't remeber them right now; maybe someone else can chime in.

Yes. TE stands for "Tractor England" TO stands for "Tractor Overseas". The third letter usually stands for a variation on the original theme e.g. what fuel it used. Just to confuse matters,the TED was not the diesel version, ( although it sounds as though it ought to be)The diesel was known as the TEF!
