Your attention; I went to buy the tractor today, but in driving it around the block a few times, I noticed that the Pittman Arm things, which extend down from the steering box, and connect through bushings to the connector rods that turn the wheels, were extremely loose. One can see into the cast box at the top. Unlike a Ford, these are not bolted into the box, but appear to be somehow connected internally through a pressed-in bearing or bushing. Is the repair thus indicated one that an amateur might easily or at least without tears accomplish? The bushings that connect these arms to the long steering rods (also very loose) are threaded into these longer rods at one end, and appear to be bolted from the back into the bushings. This seems an easy repair, but the first problem I have tried to describe seems daunting. Any thoughts?

If you look just above where the shafts come out of the box you will see a large nut with a screw slot in the centre, if you slacken the nut and screw the centre in it should remove the play in the steering sectors, don't over tighten them though. Yes they do have a bolt in the end to hold them in place. The steering joints are simply screwed into the track rods and to adjust the toe-in of the steering you slacken off the front and rear clamp on the rods and screw the rod to change its length. You should have the drop arms that come out of the steering box set equally above the footrests either side and then adjust the steering toe-in. The rods should be of equal length. The toe-in should be 1/8". If need to replace the bushes in the box then you will need to strip it down, I have the parts list and if you need it just email me.
