TO-30 Steering wheel height

I have a 1954. The steering wheel sits low on the shaft close to the throttle. Its a bit of a problem being so close to the throttle. When turning the wheel, I hit the throttle with my fingers all the time. A friend of mine has the same year Fergie only his wheel sits 2 inches higher. I notice the difference in wheel heights with other fergies. Does anyone know why this was done? Or how I can raise the height of the wheel?

There is only one shaft shown in the parts list and that fits TO20/ TO30 and ALL TE20 series. Possibly someone has had one made at some time for some obscure reason. Try to find one at a tractor breakers yard.

I agree with John. The steering wheel is pretty close to the throttle, maybe an inch or so clearance as I remember,so if you have really big hands and gloves on it may be an issue. But if you have compared to other tractors and yours is less, than maybe the steering wheel is not correct configuration. Otherwise it would seem to be a major job to lower the height because the housing assy would have to have a section cut out of it and a short shaft made as well. Can you post a picture??

As Phil says, the steering wheel could be an odd one someone has fitted at some time or is the throttle lever bent upwards near so it is nearer to the wheel.

I think you hit it on the head. My steering wheel does not have the raised spokes to offset it from the hub. Also noticed that my friend who has the same year Fergie, had a loader. The seat was fitted with an option to raise the driver up. His steering columb has a spacer added to raise the steering wheel up. I guess it was an option for better visability. Thanks guys, I"ll look for another steering wheel.
