Hello all,
I have a to-20 and as I was mowing along this afternoon, my old tractor sputtered and quit on me. After a little inspection I noticed that there was gas flowing out of the air intake, now it is fair to say that the float is sticking open but what would be the cause and what would be the solution, I am thinking a carb rebuild?? Any and all help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry I don't have any info. for your carburator problem, but I was wondering if you could tell me roughly what a Ferguson to 20 is worth. I have one I would like to sell and have no idea what it is worth. Thank you.

Depending on the condition of your tractor I would say somewhere around $2000

It sounds a lot like a sticking float. The rebuild on these Marvel Schleber carbs is very easy, just make sure you get the right kit for your carb. There should be a brass plate on the side to identify which carb you have. Follow the instructions and make sure the float is set properly. Also, I always turn in the mixture screws and count the turns so that when you put it back together is should be the same as when you take it apart. Use plenty of carb cleaner too to get into all of the jetting areas.

Good luck.

Well, I rebuilt the carb and put it back together and it is doing the same thing, the float appears to be adjusted right and I even put the float in some kerosene to see if it floats and it did, I took the top part of the carb and bolted it to the tractor turned on the fuel and with my finger I can turn the gas on and off with the float but when I put the bowl on it floods, could the float be binding in the bowl?? I am quickly running out of ideas!!!

Well I dont know what I did but the tractor is running and it is not leaking fuel, however there appears to be something like condensation forming around the top side of the carb where it meets the intake manifold, any ideas on this??

Condensation and frost on the outside of the carb around the throat of the carburetor at high humidities when the temperatures are below 50oF is a common occurance. In fact, some rough running under these conditions due to frost on the inside of the carburetor is common. It's caused by the evaporative cooling of the fuel in combination with low ambient temperatures and the high velocities at the carb throat and high humidity. Allowing the tractor to warm up and the manifold to get hot will take care of it. The Marvel-Schebler carb is very sensitive to float setting and the flooding you describe is common. If you remove the carb again, make sure that the float assembly is not twisted so that it rubs on the side of the float bowl. this could cause it to hang up. A bit of trial and error on the float setting will usually cure the problem and for added insurance, shut off the fuel valve when you shut the engine off and your carb won't leak $3.00 a gallon gas all over.
