TO-20 Broken Starter Drive Housing

Had that problem with my TO30.The first time the nose cone broke I had it welded. After several months use it broke again. Found a used nose cone and installed it.Learned that timming has tobe right on. I had my profesional assistent to help set timming.We set timming by the book and shimmed the starter out with shims cut from a pop can. Never had any trouble after that.

Thanks for the sugesstions on timing. In answer to your question, no I haven't ever checked it with a light, always snapped it staic on #1 cylinder and then fine tuned the timing by ear. I'll clean out the hole in the block & shoot the timing with a light when I get the new nose piece installed. I don't know if it would warrant messing around with any shims. I used to have to do that to small block Chevys sometimes, but they all made a major "zing" noise that was hard to miss or ignore. Also left wear marks on the starer drive gear after just a couple of starts. I have no unusual noise and no marks on the gears. I forgot to add in original post that I had the starter gone through by a good local starter shop when I had the first welded housing put on. The bendix assembly still looks like brand new. Also charging system is 12 volt alt. conversion w/ 6 volt coil & starter.
