I have a TEF 20 Diesel made in 1956. When driving along and wishing to stop, if I put my foot on the clutch, it often won"t disengage, the only way to get it to disengage is a sharp jab on the brakes! Not good!
My question is, what exactly is causing the problem, is it the release bearing?
If not can you suggest what is the problem, and if it necessitates the splitting of the tractor, how do I go about this?
If I need to change the clutch would anyone be able to go through what I have to do please?
I will have to have a go myself, as funds are very limited!

Thanks, Mark

I had similar problems with mine TEF20 -55,
i thought the clutch was rusty after 15 years
"beauty sleep", but when i last winter opened it,
it was full of oil and dust from the clutch.
The oil had come from the gearbox, the original
oil seal had become so loose it had at least
1mm gap around the main shaft.
I did renew the gearbox and engine oilseal +
the clutchdisk + release bearing + flywheel bearing, and now it is working fine.

Release bearing will have nothing to do with your problem, it is the plate either sticking to the flywheel through being contaminated with oil or grease OR the plate is not sliding along the drive input shaft because of rust or oil mixed with dust from the clutch plate. You will most likely find that the rear main oil seal on the crankshaft is leaking and causing oil to get onto the plate, these seals go hard and brittle with age and don't seal anymore. It is quite a big job to split a TEF and it is heavy too, don't try to do this on your own. If you need the information on what to do to split it, email me at: fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk
remind me what you need and I will send it to you.....John
PS I am assuming that you have checked the clutch pedal free-play which should be 3/8" between the footrest and the clutch pedal arm.

Presuming the tractor is not suffering from being used only for a few minutes irregualrly, in which case it could be a rust situation, I"d suggest it"s oil on the clutch. Might try slipping the clutch with brakes on and a fair bit of throttle for a few seconds - may improve it. Can"t see the release brg has anything to do with your symptoms.
