I have recently completed the restoration of my TO-35 which included a re-build of the Carter UT carburator. I can't seem to get anything but a rich setting. It runs on the rich side at operating RPM, and very rich (black smoke/rough idle) at idle speed. How far from factory specs should I go in leaning it? What does the "idle mixture screw" control (air or fuel)? Could using an aftermarket (cheap) exhaust sytem be the problem . . . ie. too little back pressure? I'd appreciate any input that anyone might have. Thank you in advance!

Is this carter carb original? My TO35 has this carb also but I was under the impression that this wasn't original. The tag an it even gave me a Marvel Schebler rebuild kit number (2223S), but I can find nothing for this carter. It has carter 985 UT on the bowl but I have yet to find anyone who can do anything with this number. HELP!

According to TO35 factory owners manual,
idle mixture screw on the Carter adds air,
so further out is leaner. "First try at
it" recommended settings are 1 turn out
from closed on the idle mixture, and 1
to 1-1/4 turns out on the main.

Sounds to me like you're somehow leaking
more fuel into the airstream. Maybe
a fixed volume leak, so that it's worse
at idle and not as bad at higher rpm.
Any place in there that would do it?
Wrong float level, or a leaking float
needle valve - though the needle valve
usually makes its presence known
by creating a nice puddle on the
garage floor.

I run 3' pipe for an exhaust (good for
those exciting brush fires), I think
a too open exhaust tends to make it
run lean, not rich. If the new system
is too constricted it might richen it
up, but would run worse (not better) at
higher rpm. I think somethings leaking
in the carb.
