The PTO oil seal is very easy to replace.

If you are going to change a PTO seal it is an excellent time to perform other maintenance on the rear end if needed.

1st question: Does Trans-hydro oil need changed?
(If yes then there is a cleaning procedure available)

2nd ?: Does your lift stay up for a while after shut down? If not then you may want to diagnose where the leak is and fix while the fluid is out.

However, to change the PTO Seal follow these steps.

1) Drain Trans. Fluid. If in good condition it may be drained into clean containers and re-used. Filter as the system is filled.

2) Alternatively, park the tractor on a slope, nose down or drive rear tires onto car ramps. The trans-Hydro fluid will flow away from the PTO and minimize the amount that needs to be removed.

3) Remove the bolts holding on the PTO retainer plate (i.e. where the check chains are attached)

4) Remove flush screws holding plate and remove Retainer plate.

5) Remove PTO seal housing. (This is the piece that is threaded for the PTO cover.) To remove attach PTO cover to help provide grip and pull out. Alternatively, a screwdriver maybe inserted in to the hole in the PTO splines and used to gently pull the PTO shaft and Retainer out.

6) once the PTO retainer is removed, Remove "O"-ring.

7) used a wooded dowel and hammer to gently drive PTO seal from the Retainer. Note PTO seal orientation.

8) Place new seal in correct orientation into retainer and gently and squarely push the new seal flush with retainer.

9) To drive seal to final position use a 2" PVC Coupler fitting and a bench vice to seat the seal home. A 2" PVC coupler fitting has an outer Diameter that will fit into the retainer, an edge lip wide enough to contact the seal lip and is stiff enough to drive the seal squarely in the retainer.

10) Place new "O" ring on outside of retainer.

11) Replace PTO retainer into the tractor.

12) Replace the retainer plate, replace check chains and bolts.

13) Check and refill fluids as necessary.

14) Done.

Jeff

THe manual calls for 90-wt mineral oil in the transmission. In todays parlance that is 90 wt. GL-1 gear lube. It is available from NAPA and the PN is 65-205 for a 5 gallon bucket.

90 wt. GL-1 is also sold under the Shell brand name Dextron.
