My TO 35 has been hard to start for the year that I have had it and I was told it has always been hard to start. I have put new glow plugs and it helped alot, I changed filters that I don't know how fuel was going through them, I run Lucas fuel treatment in it, ajusted the valves, and tried to set the timing. It is still hard to crank. I'm just about to give up and keep a chain tied to the front for easy starts. And it smokes bad when it's not under a load. Any advice?

As per other posts, I presume this is a 4cyl Std diesel - always were a bugger to start. A whif of ether whilst it"s cranking over does the trick, & provided you don"t put so much it knocks, will do no harm. Try spaying it past the intake, instead of directly into it.
You say it smokes when not under load. If this is grey colour, check your spill timing is corect.

I know this doesn"t sound right, but I"ve seen my son do it many times. When a diesel won"t start right off, he gives it a sniff of WD40. It starts a lot niceer, with less rattling and noise, and less smoke, then starting fluid. I don"t know why, but it works.

Well, Mine is also hard to start and has been ever since I've had it. I was told by the previous owner to spray just a TEENY shot of starting fluid (ether)into the intake as you're cranking and it fires right off. It knocks and belches for about 5 seconds and then levels off. BTW, I'm assuming you have the 4 cylinder Standard, and not the 3 cylinder Perkins.
After it warms up, it starts on its own. I guess it's just a nature of the beast.
