I have a TO-35 with a recently rebuilt engine. It starts fine when cold, cranks fast etc. But after it has warmed up, it barely cranks at all and cannot be restarted until it cools off.

This is reproducible, so it sort of rules out bad connections. I wondered if it just happens because the engine being just rebuilt, gets tigher as it warms up?

Has yours had a recent rebuild?

Golly guys, as an old starter man, just break down and get a new,rebuilt or have yours redone, what is taking place is a short in the fields or armature due to worn end bushings or a short in the windings. no easy way to fix except tear apart and find the problem, and this means a shop qualified in that field. Been there and done this for many years.Good luck in your projects.

Thanks for your insight. In my case, I didn't suspect the starter because I thought this had been rebuilt before I got it. Second, I didn't realize that this kind of behaviour...that is cold starting fine, can hardly crank when hot...is characteristic of a problem in the starter.

Yes.I recently bought my TO-30 (3 weeks)and it had undergone extensive engine and hydraulic re-build,however,I'm doubtful thats influencing the starting issues.I'm just trying to go step-by step and i.d. the source of the problem.This forum has been a great source of inspiration.

I installed a new piston/sleeve kit in my TO20 and it does the same thing..spins over quick when cold but seems "tight" when hot. Always starts though, just turns slower.

I did have a problem with my starter once getting slower and slower. Took it to a shop and it turned out the connection inside to the wiring post was bad. Cheap fix.

i think i would try turning the engine with a crank handle a few turns see if you encounter any unusual resistance,do it first when its cold then when its hot and compare the difference if any ,i presume you have good oil pressure and water tempreature gauge and the readings are normal,also one thing i had myself was the starter pinion gear was hanging up on the ring gesr and i noticed this by putting my hand on the starter when the tractor was running ,it got pretty hot but i caught it in time and had to replace the starter drive assembly,DO NOT LUBE THIS SHAFT if you have occasion to replace,it doesn't like oil of any kind
