I smell like a gas can after I use my tractor. Is this normal? Is the carb at issue here?

I know it's old and doesn't burn as clean as todays engines do, but I can't imagine it was really this bad.

I have a similar issue but I smell like exhaust. and get to many fumes..Don't see anything obvious. Any help would be great.

Be sure to leave plenty of expansion room in the top of the gas tank when you fill it (radiator and battery likewise). If it's filled close to the top, the normal heat of operation will expand the liquid and push some out the top.

Hey Preston. You did not mention what type of tractor you have. If your smell is coming from fumes from the exhaust, I would take a careful look at the needle and seat in the carb. If someone tightened it down too tight in the past, it could have a shoulder on the needle that will prevent it from properly metering your fuel and you will be passing a lot of fuel through the engine that does not get burned. Consequently, you are getting sprayed by the exhaust as it exits the engine. You may also want to check the fuel lines in and around the carb as you may have a leak that is spraying fuel back on you under heavy use. Hope this helps. Let us know what you find.

Not normal, healthy or safe.
Do you have a fuel leak anywhere - tank, fuel lines etc?

It's a TO-35.

I don't think there's a fuel leak. From what I can tell the exhaust is only coming out the tailpipe.. maybe it's got a hole somewhere? My hunch is that it's buring mixture that's to strong.

However, using my chainsaw leaves the same smell, so I gotta wonder if this is normal.

I had a similiar "smell" problem with my T035. It turned out that my gaskets were worn on my manifold and exhaust was leaking. I replaced these and the smell went away.
