Sunday I went back to mow and the lift was still not working, so I pulled the inspection plates and plunged into the oil. The lift fork was still firmly attached to the control valve. Every thing looked good, the spring was tight and in place. I could not find a thing wrong. I buttoned the transmission back up. My wife wanted to walk the perimeter of the field later so I had to cut a path (the main 15 acre field had not been cut at all this year and was a chest high).

The PTO would turn, but the lift would not work. I dragged the mower on the ground in 1st gear through the high grass. It actually did very well. I only bogged down a couple of times.

Over the summer several dead trees had fallen into the edges of the field and I had to maneuver around them. I got hung up on one tree and had to back the tractor up. I backed up 10 feet or so and put it back in 1st gear. Low and behold the lift was working again.

Can anyone explain what happened? All I can figure is that the Hydraulic pump gear, transmission rail got out of line and the act of shifting into reverse somehow fixed this. Your knowledge is appreciated.

Look for this to happen again next year. I had exactly the same thing happen to me. Reach in, disconnect the fork, pull the valve out and clean it with something to remove the varnish that is built up on it. A toothbrush can be used to clean the port that the valve goes in. This can be done without removing the pump.

The Control valve had stuck, just leaving it running can very often allow it to free off.
