TO-20 crazy distributor problem

My original distributor is wearing out. It has a lot of play in it and keeps breaking rotor buttons. It seems that the shaft has enough play in it that the button is breaking on the top of the cap, at least that's my guess. It cut off the other day and the rotor button was broke again and seemed to have jumped time. While going through the process of turning the motor to TDC and putting the distributor back in pointing to # 1, a strange thing happened. As I tried to start the engine after 4 or 5 revolutions, the distributor was hopping up and down and even bent the bracket that holds it in the engine. I'm sure had it pushed all the way in because I made an extra effort to make sure it was. When I pulled it out again I looked in the hole with a light and saw the gear (on the cam shaft that turns the distributor) appears to be a little scarred up. I bought a new distributor but am afraid to put in because I don't want to mess it up. Has anyone had an experience like this or any Ideas as to what caused this? John in the UK said a while back there could be a nut missing off the front of the camshaft. I would have to take the timing cover off and adjust the governor after putting it back on. Sounds very complicated. Does anyone have an explded view of the camshaft?

I read through the archives and found out Nickkk has had this problem. If you see this posting Nickkk please let me know if the nut is easily replaced. Do you have to take the oil pan off, or can you just get another nut to replace it with? Does the camshaft have to be removed and replaced? If you know where there is an exploded view of the cam is please let me know.

It is very simple in there. If i haven't sent you the information on how to reset the governor, email me at:-
fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk
and tell me what you need.
I also have a view of the camshaft You may have to take the oil pan off to find the nut if it has dropped off, there is no need to remove the camshaft unless there is something wrong with it.
