To-30 alternator diode

I bought a 1 amp/50 volt diode at Radio Shack and was wondering how to hook it up so that my tractor will shut off when I turn the switch off. I tried attaching it with a crimp-on butt connector and it dosen't crimp down tight enough.(The diode has a little solid wire at both ends) Has anyone hooked one of these up before? Any info is appreciated. I am sure hooking the diode up is better than trying to pull the coil wire off with a set of pliers ! That tends to be a shocking experience

On this site under Research/infor click on Articles...I found a nice article with a schematic for installing the diode. Soldered using heat sinks observed polarity and then shrink tubed the soldered joints. it worked like a charm.

You could use a switch in place of the diode. The switch would have to disconnect your excitation wire from all others on the tractor when in the off position. I did something clever with those heat shrinkable crimp on connectors to install my diode. I am sure that soldering the wires to the diode would have worked very well also. In this case I would slide several lengths of heat shrink on the wire prior to soldering. Then just shrink them one at a time over the diode and each other. Make the first tube just long enough to cover all bare wire and make each that follows a little longer.

Kirk, I usually buy a 5 amp or more diode just cuz it may have bigger leads which are easier to connect, even though that many amps isnt required. It has to be connected the proper orientation to work you know as it serves as a one way current flow check valve to allow current flow into an alternator to excite the field/rotor but NOT allow it to flow out of the alternator which can back feed the igniiton coil whereby she runs on even with the switch OFF.

If youre at Negative ground (most alternators) the diodes - Cathode wires to the alternator and its + Anode to the ignition but thats reversed if youre at positive ground.

NOTE Im not sure what alternator you have but guessed its like a GM 10 SI or equivalent so if its NOT that disregard this post. On the GM 10 SI alternators I add a 10 ohm resistor in that excitation circuit also.

I soldered mine in and do it fast as diode does not like heat. I also left mine exposed to air to keep it cool and putting it in the right direction helps too or it still won"t shut off.
