TO 30 Transmission Input Shaft Seal

I have my block out to be rebuilt(cracked cylinders that are getting bolted together), and someone recommended i should look at replacing my transmission input shaft seal while tractor is apart. I have a TO 30 with the hi lo transmission. Where is this seal located? How hard is it to replace(for a rookie)? Any special tools? I appreciate all the wealth of knowledge from this site. Thanks

If you have the Sherman Hi-Low, the only input shaft seal is at the input to the Hi-Lo transmission, not the Ferguson transmission. The Ferguson input shaft, seal, bearing and gear is replaced with the Sherman Hi-Lo and its input shaft, seal, transmission (with the output shaft & gear). See the pictures at the link. I don't know if this is the same as the Ferguson input shaft seal.. Contact Smith at his site for Sherman questions. Jim

Thanks for the link. Mine looks like the Hupp Dual Drive. Mine has 4 forward,1 reverse on main shifter and on the rightside as sitting one seat a separate shifter that has hi,lo and neutral. It is not dumping out fluid but the inside of the bell housing is somewhat wet. i just didn't want to overlook something i should do while i had block out.

Check for lettering on the side shifter or on the hi/lo case... the right shifter is a good indicator that it is a Hupp. Jim

Thanks again Jim for the link. I have a Hupp and all this time i thought i just had four regular gears and four high gears but after looking it the web link you can pull the lever sideways and have four lower gears.

If you look at item 26 in the parts list that is the equivalent of the Ferguson seal except that it is now further forward because the Sherman g/box is bolted directly on the front face of the gearbox, so it is possibly easier to get at if that is the case. But as you are only replacing it just in case....if it isn't leaking, really no need to change it yet, up to you.

I might add, that since George Sherman, Harry Ferguson and Henry Ford were all close buddies (for that time) and shared lots of parts, I would not be surprised to find that some, or maybe all three, share the same seal.

It's on the main shaft into the box from the clutch, in your case it will be at the back of the hi-lo transmission. It's behind the tube with plate that fastens to the front of the gearbox on the main drive. Normally this is a long tube with the drive from the clutch running through the middle, it will be different on yours because of the hi-lo transmission. You shouldn't need any special tools to replace the seal.

That 4 bolt plate would be the one. While you have the shaft out, you can use it as an alignment tool to line up the clutch when you reinstall the clutch and pressure plate. Replace the input shaft and seal, and reassemble your tractor halves.

I have seals and gaskets coming today for the TO30. I ordered a set for my TO 20 without the Hupp also. The massey dealer told me they think both took the same ones. Does anybody know for sure?

They should be the same, the changes made to the tractor were the engine and the rear axle and some hydraulic specs.

I knew the tractors were mostly the same but one has the hupp and one doesn't.
