Terry,

The service manual that I have says that the cranks for the TO20, TO30, & TE20 are the same.

Main bearing journals - 2.250 - 2.249
Connecting rod journals - 1.9375 - 1.9365

It also says that if the "main bearing journals or the crank pin journals are more than .0015 in. out of round, or that the taper wear of the journals exceeds .001 in, the shaft isn't suitable for use and should be reground. When reconditioning a crankshaft, the journals should be ground down unitl their diameters are .010 or .020 less than the original diameters."

The engine must be separated from the tranny to remove the shaft. I really suggest you invest in a manual before you tackle this job. I just overhauled mine myself and the IT manual was very helpful. Click on "tractor manuals" to the left of this column and order one. It could save you a lot of grief. GOod luck !!!!

Dennis

I'm planning an engine rebuild for my TO-20 this winter. Any insights or cautions you could offer from your previous experience?

Neal

It's the same as doing any engine. I did have trouble getting the metal timing gear off/on the crankshaft. Finally borrowed the proper puller. Also had problems following the placement of the thrust washers on the shaft from the diagrams vs what came with the ohaul kit. Make sure you run a wire through all oil holes/channels in the block and follow that with a good blast of air through each. The oil tubes running to the crankshaft and camshaft thru the block tend to get plugged with muck. Also check all the oil holes in the shaft itself. It's a small simple engine and easy to work on.

Make sure you have some help when you split the tractor. It is very helpful to have someone on the lift while you unbolt the engine from the tranny. Especially so when you need to put it back !!

Block up everything securely. Safety first !!!!

Good luck !!!
